Members of the Burlingame Leos Club, the teen group affiliated with the Burlingame Lions Club, are collecting children’s books to establish a community library in Malawi, Africa. They are asking donors who want to contribute gently used books at the preschool through eighth grade reading level to drop them off in the office of any school in the Burlingame School District, Burlingame High School or XTRIM Bollywood Fitness in Foster City. Books must be received by June 1.
The campaign is part of the African Library Project (ALP), a nonprofit organization that matches schools and organizations throughout the U.S. with African communities to establish libraries. ALP was started in 2005 by a Portola Valley resident after she visited Lesotho on a family vacation and realized that establishing small libraries in Africa would help end the cycle of poverty and illiteracy.
“I love to read and I go to the library all the time,” said 14-year-old Neha Bandrapalli, a Leo who is helping to organize the book drive. “To see kids in Malawi who are deprived of something as basic as reading is utterly heart wrenching. It is a privilege and an honor to assist the youth of Malawi by helping contribute books that will enable them to achieve their educational goals, ambitions and lifelong dreams.”
Lightly used books for the preschool through eighth grade level may be dropped off during school hours until June 1 at these locations in Burlingame:
· Burlingame Intermediate School, 1715 Quesada Way
· Franklin Elementary School, 2385 Trousdale Drive
