REAL-WORLD, HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE
Through the years PenTV has enjoyed the contributions of many interns at all levels and from all walks of life. Interns work with PenTV’s professional staff in a professional environment and may choose from a wide range of standard internships or create a custom internship to fit their skills and career goals.
PenTV operates on Cable Channel 26 in San Mateo County and supports a comprehensive web site and blog and provides training, resources, and support for educators and other community members.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

- A resume, including internship goal(s), summary of work, volunteer work experience and interests.

Create A Custom Internship
ADVANCED PRODUCTION
Students will be expected to take initiative on video programs or a series to conduct research, develop contacts, plan shooting, oversee production, complete post-production and see the project(s) through to final presentation and cablecast.
Production Assistant – In this advanced internship offering a professional experience working in collaboration with television professionals and community experts, student works with our production and administrative personnel to develop specific production project(s) from start to finish.
Community Partner Development – Work with a specific community organization within guidelines of PenTV’s mission to create a series of TV programs showcasing that organization, its members, or events promoted by it. Student may propose an educational organizations to work with, or work with an existing PenTV partner organization.
Prerequisites for ALL Advanced Production Internships:
Some experience in both television production and research is essential. General knowledge of process of television program development is important, and the ability to work independently and professionally with community contacts is critical. Academic background in communications, education, English or other appropriate areas preferred. Good writing and verbal skills, including telephone skills, are necessary.
PRODUCTION INTERNSHIPS
Overview of Production Internships
- Interns learn proper and effective use of PenTV production equipment.
- Interns work with PenTV’s production team to create programs with schools, colleges and local educational organizations, businesses, and others.
- Interns work on multiple-camera and single-camera field productions, as well as working on various aspects of pre-production and post-production.
General Learning Objectives of Production Internships
- Learn basics of television production
- Work with professional production team for field and studio productions
- Improve technical skills with camera, composition, lighting & audio
- Make corrections and complete programs using non-linear editing systems
- Learn all aspects of pre-production, production and post-production
Music – Work writing original musical scores for TV credits, short form loops, 30-second, 1-minute, 2-minute, or other beds, using Soundtrack or other live or digital instrumentation. This work may include creating a signature song (music and/or lyrics) for PenTV and may include working with local music libraries or musicians to record original music for production use.
Graphics – Work creating graphic packages for existing PenTV series and generic graphics templates for future shows as well as signature graphic design for us. This work may include work with community producers to customize their programs.
Classroom Partner Development – Work with teachers/classes or individual students to produce a video showcasing professional development, academic curriculum, or creative learning. This internship would be in partnership with a teacher or school.
Artist Collaboration – Work with local artists or musicians to showcase their work in short videos or a series. This work will entail significant organization, scheduling and collaboration.
Local PSAs – Work creating public service announcements for local issues or on local organizations, including PSAs related to PenTV, its mission, and its partners.
Prerequisite for ALL Production Internships:
Some basic knowledge of video production needed, and students with completed course work or academic concentrations in communications, journalism, education, media, English, technology or other related fields are preferred.
NON-PRODUCTION INTERNSHIPS
Integrated Marketing & Communication – Work to develop and implement ongoing promotion strategy for PenTV activities. Marketing activities involve television, Internet, radio, newspaper, magazine and display media.
Prerequisite:
Some background in marketing is necessary, with strong organizational skills, writing skills, and creative thinking preferred. Ability to work on the telephone and with the computer is essential.
Small Business – Work with PenTV personnel to conduct the business affairs of a small not-for-profit community media business. Work includes basic accounting, bookkeeping and contract work.
Prerequisite:
Experience and completed course work in business necessary. Ability to work well with others and ask questions a must. Good telephone, computer and math skills essential. Academic background in business, education or other appropriate areas preferred.
Online Development – Work directly with PenTV professional staff and consultants on ongoing development of the web site and other new-media marketing tools.
Prerequisite:
Strong computer and Internet skills, along with verbal and written skills essential. An attitude agreeable to rapid pace, flexibility and attention to detail is necessary. Ability to work professionally and independently and meet deadlines required. Academic background in multi-media, communications, business or other appropriate fields preferred.
