The Game - 270 - Special One-Hour Edition - New Faces in Peninsula Politics
The 2018 election brought to office an unprecedented number of women and minorities.

In a special edition of our show, we talk to four newly elected city council members about the changing politics of the Peninsula. The Game is politics, The Game is on.

Welcome to a special, hour-long edition of The Game.

San Mateo County is growing ever more diverse. And economically, its ties to the technology industry are growing ever stronger. Reflecting those changes, the most recent elections meant an unprecedented number of minorities and women won election to their respective city councils and school boards. It means new leadership, a new generation of elected officials who will be seeking higher office and it is a change in our political infrastructure that has just begun.

To talk about these changing times, we are joined by four newly elected city council members: Giselle Hale from Redwood City, Mark Nagales from South San Francisco, Drew Combs from Menlo Park and Richa Awasthi from Foster City.

As individual wealth grows on the Peninsula, who are emerging as the leaders in innovative giving and solving our community’s problems?

We hear about former 49ers who are looking out for their teammates and a lineup of philanthropists who are thinking globally and acting locally. The Game is Giving. The Game is on.

The longstanding criticism of Silicon Valley is that it does not give – that compared to other areas with similar wealth and economic status, this region lags behind in philanthropic donations. But it may be that the giving here is low-profile and quiet, with an emphasis on the good works, rather than garnering attention.

In this time of year, when, as Dickens wrote, want is most keenly felt, a Peninsula magazine, Modern Luxury Silicon Valley, is out with an issue focused on philanthropy and we are joined by the Editor in Chief, Carolyn Zinko, to talk about Silicon Valley giving and some local efforts that belie the reputation.

Growth, traffic, infrastructure and change. What did voters say about these pressing issues in the November election? We get some answers from two community leaders at the center of these issues. The Game is Politics. The Game is on.

The issues of growth and construction were on nearly every ballot in last month’s election – either as a central issue in a city council campaign or in the form of Measure W, the countywide sales tax increase that would provide money for transit and transportation projects and barely squeaked past the two-thirds threshold. What signals did voters send about the changes taking place in our community and the economics behind those changes?

We talk with two leaders who were in the midst of these issues: Rosanne Foust, president & CEO of the San Mateo County Economic Development Association, and Charles
Stone, member of the Belmont City Council and chair of the SamTrans Board of Directors. Both of them were heavily involved in the leadership of the Yes on Measure W campaign.
